THE GIFT OF ARCHITECTURE
2023. SPRING/Taubman College Workshop

Year: Taubman College, Spring, 2023
Location: Munich, Germany
Type: Exhibition Design
Instructor:Dr. Damjan Kokalevski, Prof. Lukasz Stanek.
Collaborators: Ilyas Kerem Yilmaz, Josephine Amakye, and others student from UMich and TUM Munich

Contribution: Assisted in initial design concept of the exhibition, including the exhibition arrangement and installations.

This exhibition focuses on the issue of architecture becoming a gift from the Soviet Union or other developed countries to developing countries, along with the context and problems that arise from this topic.

Our group focuses on the topic of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Ghana. The university land was a gift from King Agyeman Prempeh I, who established a modern university on land that the local community had long used for farming and housing. This decision gave rise to a series of problems, including questions about how the unequal relationship between giver and receiver contributes to both the generosity and violence that architecture can inflict, as well as what an architectural gift can offer and the harm it can cause.

The exhibition was held at the Architecture Museum of the Technical University of Munich and was scheduled to open on February 27, 2024.
